Pruning & training fruit in MarchFinish planting trees and bushes by the 2nd week in March Prune out old wood on established acid cherries (such as morello) if not already done Prune blueberries Plant out strawberry runners Untie and re-train blackberry and hybrid berry canes before the buds burst
HarvestingContinue harvesting Rhubarb picking 1 or 2 sticks from each plant at any one time
Care and Protecting Fruit in MarchProtect blossoms on trees a double layer of netting or fleece if frost is expected Cover strawberries with cloches or poly tunnels for an earlier crop Hand pollinate early flowering trees particularly if insects seem scarce Apply fertiliser to trees and bushes if not already done in February (see individual growing pages) Apply a mulch to young fruit trees, bushes and canes Spray apples and pears against scab Spray blackcurrants against leaf spot, mould and mildew Spray gooseberries against mildew
